The best time to post YouTube Shorts

Shorts do not behave like long-form uploads. They are pushed into an infinite feed that keeps re-testing them for days, sometimes weeks. That changes what publish timing can and cannot do for you.

The windows that work

DayWindow (viewer local time)Notes
Monday11am – 1pmLunch-break scrolling
Tuesday – Thursday11am – 1pm and 7pm – 9pmTwo clear peaks on weekdays
Friday1pm – 4pmAttention shifts earlier as the week ends
Saturday9am – 11amHighest-volume Shorts day
Sunday7pm – 9pmEvening scroll before the week restarts

Why the Shorts feed changes the maths

A long-form upload gets one big push: notifications, the Subscriptions feed, the home page. If that push lands at 3am, you lose it. A Short is served to a small test audience, measured, then served to a larger one if the swipe-away rate is low. That loop runs continuously, so a Short posted at a bad hour simply starts its testing cycle a bit later.

This is why Shorts sometimes 'wake up' weeks after publication. The feed re-tests old content when a new signal suggests it might land — something that essentially never happens with a poorly performing long-form video.

What actually drives Shorts performance

  1. 1The first 1-2 seconds. If the opening frame does not stop the swipe, nothing else matters.
  2. 2Loop quality. Shorts that end where they began get counted as replays, which inflates viewed-vs-swiped ratios.
  3. 3Duration discipline. A 20-second Short that holds 90% beats a 55-second Short that holds 40%.
  4. 4Frequency. Multiple Shorts per week give the feed more chances to find your audience.
  5. 5Hook text on screen. Readable in under a second, no more than six words.

Should you post Shorts and long-form on the same day?

It is fine, and often useful — a Short published a few hours after a long-form video can act as a trailer. The old worry about Shorts 'cannibalising' long-form watch time has not held up: they are distributed by separate surfaces and measured separately in Analytics.

What does hurt is a mismatch in audience. If your Shorts pull a completely different viewer than your long-form content, your subscriber growth will not translate into long-form views. Check the 'Shorts viewers who watched your long-form' figure in the Audience tab before scaling up.

How to find your own window

  1. 1Open Studio, Analytics, Audience, and read the activity heatmap.
  2. 2Post Shorts one hour before the darkest block for two weeks.
  3. 3Compare median 48-hour views, not 24-hour — Shorts ramp more slowly.
  4. 4If the difference is under 15%, stop optimising time and start testing hooks.

Shorts reward volume. Generate a batch of hook-first ideas in your niche in a few seconds.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to post YouTube Shorts?
Weekday lunch hours (11am–1pm) and evenings (7pm–9pm) in your viewers' local time, with Saturday mornings the strongest single window. Your own Audience heatmap should override these.
How many Shorts should I post per week?
Three to seven if you can maintain quality. Frequency gives the feed more testing opportunities, which matters more for Shorts than for long-form.
Do Shorts hurt my long-form views?
No. They are distributed through separate surfaces. The real risk is attracting Shorts viewers who never watch long-form, which shows up as subscriber growth without watch-time growth.
Why did my old Short suddenly get views?
The Shorts feed periodically re-tests older content. Unlike long-form, a Short is never fully finished being distributed.
