How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views?

Most channels earn between $1 and $8 per 1,000 views after YouTube's cut. The spread is enormous because it depends on who is watching, where they live, and what advertisers will pay to reach them.

RPM vs CPM: the number that matters

MetricWhat it measuresWho it is for
CPMWhat advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube's shareAdvertisers
Playback-based CPMCPM across monetised playbacks onlyDiagnostics
RPMWhat you actually receive per 1,000 total views, after the revenue shareYou

YouTube keeps 45% of ad revenue on long-form and 55% on Shorts (from the creator pool). Not every view is monetised either — ad blockers, ineligible content and skipped pre-rolls all reduce the share. That is why RPM is always meaningfully lower than CPM.

Ad revenue is not the whole income

For most channels past the early stage, AdSense is the smallest revenue line. Sponsorships typically pay $10 to $30 per 1,000 views for a mid-roll integration, and affiliate or product revenue can exceed both. A 50,000-view channel with a product can out-earn a 500,000-view channel without one.

  • Sponsorships: negotiated per video, priced on views and audience quality
  • Affiliate links: strongest in review and tutorial niches
  • Own products and courses: highest margin, highest effort
  • Channel memberships and Super Thanks: small but steady
  • YouTube Premium revenue: paid on watch time from Premium subscribers, included in RPM

Frequently asked questions

How much does YouTube pay for 1,000 views?
Most channels see an RPM between $1 and $8, meaning $1 to $8 per 1,000 views after YouTube's revenue share. Finance and business channels can exceed $20 while entertainment and kids content often sits below $2.
How much does YouTube pay for 1 million views?
At a typical $2 to $8 RPM, one million views produces roughly $2,000 to $8,000 in ad revenue. High-RPM niches can reach five figures for the same view count.
What is the difference between CPM and RPM?
CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube's share. RPM is what lands in your account per 1,000 total views after the split and after unmonetised views are counted.
Why did my RPM drop suddenly?
Usually seasonality (January is the weakest month), a shift in audience geography, or a change in content that made videos less advertiser-friendly.
