What is a good CTR on YouTube?

Most channels sit between 4% and 10%. But CTR only means something when you read it next to impressions — and once you do, a lot of 'good' numbers turn out to be warnings.

Benchmarks

Impressions on the videoWeakTypicalStrong
Under 5,000< 4%6–12%> 12%
5,000 – 50,000< 3%4–8%> 8%
50,000 – 500,000< 2.5%3–6%> 6%
Over 500,000< 2%2.5–5%> 5%

When high CTR is a problem

  • 20% CTR on 800 impressions: your video is only reaching your existing audience
  • High CTR with a retention cliff in the first 30 seconds: the packaging over-promised
  • High CTR on a video with almost no suggested-video traffic: the system is not confident pairing you with anything

Improving CTR without clickbait

  1. 1Make the thumbnail readable at 120 pixels wide. This alone fixes a large share of low-CTR videos.
  2. 2Let the title and thumbnail carry different halves of the idea rather than repeating each other.
  3. 3Add a specific, concrete detail — a number, a constraint, a stake.
  4. 4Cut thumbnail text to three words.
  5. 5Use Test & Compare on your next upload with two genuinely different concepts.

The trap of optimising CTR alone

YouTube's system optimises for satisfied watch time, not clicks. A thumbnail that wins the click and loses the viewer produces worse long-term distribution than a slightly less exciting thumbnail that sets an accurate expectation. Judge changes on views at 7 days, not CTR at 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CTR on YouTube?
Between 4% and 10% for most channels. On videos with very large impression counts, 2.5% to 5% is strong because the audience is mostly non-subscribers.
Why is my CTR dropping as my video gets more views?
Because YouTube is showing it to a wider, colder audience. Falling CTR with rising impressions usually means the video is being distributed successfully.
Does CTR affect the algorithm?
Yes, but as part of a pair with retention. High click-through followed by immediate drop-off performs worse than a moderate click-through with strong watch time.
How do I improve CTR quickly?
Make the thumbnail legible at thumbnail size, cut text to three words, and make sure the title adds information the image does not already show.
