YouTube SEO: what actually ranks videos

YouTube search is the second-largest search engine in the world and the only traffic source that keeps delivering views years after upload. It is also the one most creators optimise for using advice that stopped working a decade ago.

How YouTube search actually ranks

YouTube ranks results on relevance and on engagement. Relevance is read from your title, description, spoken words, on-screen text and metadata. Engagement is whether people who click your result stay and watch. The second half is why keyword stuffing fails — you can win the impression and still lose the ranking within a week.

Keyword research that reflects reality

  1. 1Type your topic into YouTube search and read the autocomplete suggestions — those come from real query volume.
  2. 2Search the phrase and look at the top ten. If every result is a huge channel with a recent upload, pick a longer phrase.
  3. 3Check whether results have obvious gaps: outdated videos, poor thumbnails, wrong angles. Those are your openings.
  4. 4Prefer specific phrases with clear intent over broad high-volume terms you cannot win.

Optimising the video itself

Title

Lead with the keyword phrase, then add the reason to click. 'How to clean a DSLR sensor — without the £80 service' beats both the bare keyword and a clever title with no keyword at all. Keep it under about 60 characters so it does not truncate.

Generate search-friendly title variations that still earn the click.

Description

The first two lines appear in search results and above the fold. Put a real summary there containing the keyword phrase naturally. Below that, add chapters, links and context. Nobody reads a wall of keywords, and YouTube discounts it.

Chapters

Timestamps starting at 00:00, with at least three chapters of at least ten seconds, enable chapter markers. They improve the viewing experience and let individual sections surface as key moments in Google search results.

Spoken words

YouTube transcribes your audio automatically and uses it for relevance. Saying your target phrase clearly within the first 30 seconds is a genuinely underrated ranking action. Upload your own captions if the auto transcript is poor.

What no longer works

  • Tag stuffing — negligible impact and it looks like spam
  • Copying competitors' tags with browser extensions
  • Keyword-dense descriptions that read like a list
  • Renaming the video file before upload
  • Adding dozens of hashtags

The compounding play

Search-driven videos behave differently from trend videos: they start slow and accumulate. A tutorial published today might do 400 views in its first week and 40,000 over three years. Build a base of these underneath whatever else you do, and your channel stops depending on every new upload performing.

Frequently asked questions

Do tags still matter for YouTube SEO?
Barely. YouTube has stated tags play a minimal role in discovery, mainly helping with common misspellings of your channel or topic. Titles, descriptions and actual engagement matter far more.
How do I rank a video on YouTube search?
Target a phrase with real demand you can realistically compete for, put it in the title and first line of the description, say it in the first 30 seconds, and make sure viewers arriving from search actually stay.
How long does YouTube SEO take to work?
Search rankings usually settle over two to eight weeks as YouTube gathers engagement data. Well-targeted videos then keep accumulating views for years.
Does the description affect rankings?
The first two lines do meaningful work as a relevance signal and appear in search results. The rest is for viewers, not for the algorithm.
