How to name a YouTube channel

A channel name will not make you successful, but the wrong one will quietly cost you for years — misheard in recommendations, unsearchable, impossible to say out loud. Here is how to pick one you will not regret.

Rules worth following

  1. 1Say it out loud. If you have to spell it for someone, it fails.
  2. 2Keep it under about 20 characters so it does not truncate in the browse feed.
  3. 3Avoid numbers and hyphens — people mistype them constantly.
  4. 4Do not lock yourself to a single topic unless you are certain you will never widen.
  5. 5Avoid trademarked terms, including 'YouTube' itself, which is against YouTube's brand policy.
  6. 6Check the handle, the .com, and the main social platforms before committing.

Can you change a YouTube channel name later?

Yes. Display names can be changed in Studio under Customisation, then Basic info. Handles can also be changed, subject to availability and a limited number of changes in a period. The real cost of renaming is not technical — it is the recognition you throw away, so it is cheapest to do it early.

Names that consistently cause problems

  • Anything with 'TV', 'Official' or 'HD' bolted on — reads as low effort
  • Deliberate misspellings that break search
  • Names dependent on a trend that will look dated in 18 months
  • Very long descriptive phrases that get truncated everywhere
  • Anything nearly identical to an established channel in your niche

Frequently asked questions

Should my YouTube channel name include a keyword?
Only if the keyword describes a lane you are confident about for years. Keyword names help discovery slightly but limit how far you can expand.
Can I change my YouTube channel name?
Yes — display names can be changed in Studio under Customisation. Handles can also be changed subject to availability and change limits.
Can I use 'YouTube' in my channel name?
No. YouTube's brand policy prohibits using its trademarks in channel names in ways that imply affiliation or endorsement.
How long should a YouTube channel name be?
Ideally under 20 characters. Longer names get truncated in search results, the browse feed, and mobile layouts.
